A slow week on the coast

The brief someone sent Tomo

A slow week on the coast: good food, sea views, and no driving.

Why this trip

A week that refuses to hurry. You take one sea-view room and stay put, let the boats do the moving, and build each day around lunch and the light. No car, no schedule, no reason to come down off the terrace before you feel like it.

A room over the sea

You take one room in Positano with a balcony that hangs over the water, and you make it the whole trip. Mornings are a coffee on the terrace while the town wakes up in tiers below you. There is nowhere you have to be, which is precisely the reason you came.

Lunch

Lemons the size of your hand

The Amalfi lemons really are absurd, and everything here is made of them: granita from a cart, spaghetti al limone, a cold limoncello you did not order but will finish. Lunch is a lemon-shaded terrace and a carafe of something white, and it lasts until it stops being lunch.

One boat day

Out to Capri and back

The single moving day is a boat: out across the blue to Capri, past the Faraglioni rocks standing in the water like a gate, into the grotto if the sea is calm. You swim off the back of the boat, eat too much at a harbour table, and are home on your terrace by aperitivo.

Long afternoons

Up to Ravello, slowly

One afternoon you climb, by bus or a small hired car, up to Ravello, where the gardens hang off the mountain and the whole coast lays out below. You wander a villa terrace, sit through a slow hour of shade and view, and drift back down in time for the sunset spritz.
