Too pretty to be real
Hallstatt looks painted: pastel houses stacked up a mountain, dropped straight into a still green lake, a church spire in the middle of it all. You spend the first day just walking it, end to end and back, letting the kids feed the swans and getting the same photo everyone gets, because you have to.
Up the mountain, gently
The one climb is done for you: a cable-car lifts everyone up to a viewpoint where the lake shrinks to a puddle and the Alps roll off in every direction. You point out the peaks, share a strudel, let small legs rest, and ride back down without a single complaint.
Into the salt mountain
The salt mine is the day everyone remembers: wooden slides down into the mountain, an underground lake that glows, and a little miners' train that rattles you back out to daylight. It is the oldest salt mine in the world and, more to the point, the most fun a seven-year-old will have all week.
A room where the boats sleep
You stay right on the lake, in a guesthouse where the boathouses sit half in the water and the ripple is the loudest thing at night. Dinner is early and by the shore; afterwards the kids skip stones until the light goes and everyone sleeps like they earned it.
